About the San Joaquin County Superior Court

The San Joaquin County Superior Court, or alternatively the Superior Court of California, County of San Joaquin, is a unified trial court of general jurisdiction, serving San Joaquin County in California. The County has over 789,000 residents living and working across approximately 1,426 square miles. The county is named after the San Joaquin River, and is known for its economic growth and business expansion in recent years.

In its mission statement, the SJ Superior Court states that “the court shall resolve disputes and address problems applying the rule of law in a fair, equal, consistent, efficient, timely, and understandable manner with integrity and professionalism. The court shall promote public confidence and provide user-friendly, customer oriented services and treat all people with respect and dignity in a safe and secure environment.”

In order to fulfill its purpose and to serve its residents, the San Joaquin Superior Court is organized into the following 16 divisions: Appeals, Business Services and Purchasing, Civil, Civil Grand Jury, Collaborative Courts, Criminal, Family Court Services, Family Law and Court, Fish and Game, Jury Services, Juvenile, Probate, Record Management, Small Claims, Traffic, and Unlawful Detainer/Landlord Tenant.

The Court’s divisions operate out of three different locations. The Stockton Courthouse, located at 180 E Weber Ave, Stockton, CA 95202, handles cases relating to criminal, traffic, small claims, appeals, probate, unlawful detainers, family law, and juveniles. San Joaquin County Superior Court Divisions

Appeals Division

The Appeals Division of the SJ Superior Court handles civil appeals, small claims appeals, misdemeanor appeals, traffic infraction appeals, and parking appeals.

Civil Division

The Civil Division handles cases of civil harassment, typically involving a legal dispute between two parties that begins when one party files a complaint with the court.

Civil Grand Jury Division

The San Joaquin County Civil Grand Jury’s duty is to address citizens’ concerns regarding the operation of local government entities. The Civil Grand Jury is composed of 19 citizens who are impaneled annually for a one-year term. The grand jurors examine and investigate local governmental activities within San Joaquin County.

Collaborative Courts Division

The Collaborative Courts Division assists individuals in achieving total abstinence from drugs and alcohol, increasing public safety and promoting family reunification, and returns participants to the community as productive and responsible members of society. The Collaborative Courts use an evidence-based drug court model, which establishes a court team involving county government, including the Board of Supervisors and Superior Court administration.

The San Joaquin County Superior Court has successfully established six adult drug courts since 1995. These courts are the Parole Reentry Court, Drug Court, DUI Drug Court, Dependency Drug Court, Veterans Court, and AB109 Compliance Courts.

Criminal Division

The Criminal Division has jurisdiction over misdemeanors, which are generally punishable by fine and/or county jail term, as well as preliminary felony hearings and felony trials.

Family Court Services Division

The Family Court Services Division provides child custody recommending counseling for families with custody and visitation disputes. It also offers a mandatory Orientation Program for parents involved in the Family Court process.

Jury Services Division

The Jury Services Division of the San Joaquin County Superior Court provides jury services to the parties in a case.

Juvenile Division

The Juvenile Division of the San Joaquin County Superior Court adjudicates matters regarding minors. All Juvenile Dependency matters are heard at the Stockton Courthouse and all Juvenile Delinquency matters are heard at the Juvenile Justice Center.

Probate Division

The SJ Superior Court Probate Division handles decedents’ estates, guardianship of minors, and the conservatorship of adults who are unable to provide for their personal needs or manage their financial resources.

Record Management Division

The Records Management Division of the San Joaquin County Superior Court is responsible for all of the court’s archived public records, dating back to 1850. This division manages the records relating to criminal; civil, including small claims, unlawful detainer, limited and unlimited civil; appeals; traffic; juvenile; family law; family support; and probate matters.

Small Claims Division

The Small Claims Division handles civil cases dealing with amounts of $10,000 or less. The Small Claims Court is a special court where disputes are resolved quickly and inexpensively. This court does not require lawyers, rules of evidence, or juries. You don’t need to be a United States citizen to file or defend a case in the Small Claims Court.

Traffic Division

The Traffic Division of the San Joaquin Superior Court deals with vehicle code violations, local municipal code ordinances, some minor misdemeanors, infractions, fish and game, and animal codes cases.
